Daring Diaries?

Commonly when a diary is mention a book would often come to mind however in this day and age, social media can be seen as a newer form of a diary. However claimed by Laurie Mcneil (2015) the diary is but a re-evolution and not an evolution as it is basically a diary, just re-invented online. The fact that social media is being used as a diary by almost everyone can turn out to be quite dangerous as many start to get more comfortable in these places, posting whatever they see fit to gain the approval of their peers.

Often when someone has created a facebook account they feel this sense of excitement with an urged to add as many friends as possible, to post, share and like almost everything they are for, against and what they find humorous. This could be seen to be very similar to the idea of space and place (Haynes, 2016), as this is a new experience or new frontier with this grasp of freedom that they always wanted stating their opinion freely for all to see.

Many users unconsciously treat these online networks as diaries and are unable to fully grasp the danger when they expose such personal information online or when stating their opinions recklessly. Raven Schley, a reporter described over on The Signal, by treating it as a diary it has caused fights/arguments such as Rihanna’s and Ciara’s clash over the internet.

Through the use of social media, people have come to view it like an actual diary and understand it as a place (Haynes, 2016), a place of security. However forget to realise that everyone can access these personal information. Online users need to realise the insecurity that this new form of a diary has and reframe themselves from exposing personal information.
